Exploring Joana Vasconcelos’ Immersive Art Gallery Experience

The journey to the art gallery begins along a small, unremarkable street. However, upon entering the space, it becomes immediately clear that this is a captivating place. Once a skating rink, as the name suggests, it now feels more like stepping into an ancient marketplace.

Then, you enter the room dedicated to the exhibition in the dark, and that’s when the magic unfolds. From the ceiling hang a series of structures that illuminate rhythmically with LED lights, synchronized to the music. The lights flicker, dim, and fade, while the music continues, gradually revealing the intricate decorations on these “beans.” These beans are enormous, perhaps larger than a person, and there are many of them. Crafted from an assortment of fabric remnants, which somehow trace back to Dior, they have been assembled in such a way as to create a magical forest through which one can walk, immersing themselves in the interplay of a thousand alternating lights that gradually bring each “bean” into focus.

The space is large, though not overwhelming, with the beans scattered throughout, and the lights create a spectacular effect. It feels like living within a fairytale, walking through the most enchanted forest I have ever visited.

I believe Joana Vasconcelos is the most renowned living textile artist, and her fame is entirely deserved. She has the remarkable ability to craft a truly magical environment, one that is easily accessible to visitors, who find themselves fully immersed in a whimsical, otherworldly reality. It is an unforgettable experience.
